6-Day Kilimanjaro Climbing Via Marangu Route

6-Day Kilimanjaro Climbing Via Marangu Route

Overview

Marangu, also known as the Coca-Cola Route, is the most popular route on Kilimanjaro. It is the only route with sleeping huts, which come in handy in the rainy season. You can enjoy the views of the Kibo and Mawenzi volcanoes! Hiking on the Marangu Route will be fine if you climb Kilimanjaro for the first time. We recommend this route for beginners and those who appreciate comfortable conditions. The distance of the Marangu Route is about 64km (40 miles).

Itinerary

You will be picked up from Arusha (1400m) and transported to the Marangu Gate (1980m) following an early breakfast at your accommodation. While you and your guide register with Tanzania National Park, the porters will pack and arrange your hiking belongings at the gate. The ascent into the rainforest will then start. This part of the hike is likely to be wet, muddy, and foggy. Additionally, keep an eye out for animals, such as Colobus monkeys! After climbing for three to four hours, you will arrive at Mandara Hut (2700m). With six to eight sleeping bunks and solar-powered lighting, each hut may accommodate up to sixty trekkers. Toilets with flush systems are located next to the central hut. Water for washing and drinking is boiled by the porters, who go at the campsite ahead of the customers. After making supper for the clients, the chef will make a snack. The mountains can get very cold at night, so dress accordingly.

After breakfast, the group will leave Mandara Hut early in the morning to begin a moderate hike to Horombo Hut, the second high altitude camp (3,720 m). On this day, you will be able to see both Kibo and Mawenzi volcanoes at once when you arrive at the camp. You will need to finish an acclimatization climb towards Kibo Hut, which will involve an elevation gain of 200 meters, a few hours after lunch. After that, you'll climb back down to Horombo Hut, where food will be waiting for you.

Meal Plan: B, L & D

You will spend the day in Horombo Hut allowing your body to adjust to the high altitude. With your guide, you can choose to go on a day hike to Mawenzi Hut (4600m) for more acclimatization. You will have breakfast and dinner at the hut, and depending on your preferences for the day, you can have lunch at the hut or pack it in.

After a hearty breakfast, you will resume your climb into the ecosystem of the alpine desert. There are two trails that hikers can take to reach Kibo Hut (4700m). The trail used for the day hike to Mawenzi Hut the day before is the upper route, which is situated to the right of the junction. Because it is a one-hour shorter hike, the lower route—which lies to the left of the fork—is the more well-liked one. Kibo Hut is situated in the "Saddle," an alpine desert region that lies between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. This camp does not have water, however hikers can purchase soft beverages and mineral water at the camp office. To give hikers time to recover before trying to reach the peak that evening, an early meal will be provided. You'll receive a thorough instruction sheet from your guide on summit night preparation. Aim for bedtime at 7:00 p.m.

Meal Plan: B, L & D

Around 11:30 p.m., your guide will wake you up for tea and biscuits. Then you will try to reach the summit. The path leads to Hans Meyer Cave (5150m), which is rough. You will keep climbing to the elevation of Gillman's Point (5681m). Due to the trail's steepness, rocky terrain, and high altitude, reaching this portion is an incredible accomplishment. On the edge of the crater stands Gillman's. After this, the trail will typically be covered with snow until you reach Uhuru Peak (5895m), the summit. A lifetime achievement is reaching Mount Kilimanjaro's top! There will be a little window of time for you to take pictures and sip tea atop the peak before the descend to Barafu starts. It takes roughly three hours to hike down to Kibo Hut.
You will relax and savor a tasty lunch outside at Kibo Hut. You will keep descending to Horombo Hut (3720m) after eating. After a tiring day, you will eat dinner, wash, and retire to the hut.

After a breakfast, your crew will be treated to a lavish celebration that includes singing and dancing. You will provide your tips to the porters, chef(s), assistant guides, and guide here on the mountain. Following the festivities, you will return to Marangu Gate (1980m) on foot for six hours. To obtain a certificate of completion, hikers must sign their names according to the park regulations. Green certificates are awarded to hikers who reach Gillman's Point (5681 meters), while gold awards are awarded to hikers who reach Uhuru Peak (5895 meters). This will be your last day, and after getting the certificates, you'll drive back to Arusha for some much-needed celebrations and showers.
